3 Factors to Consider When Divorcing With Children

divorce-qa-litigate-or-mediate

If you’re considering divorce, there’s more to account for than just you and your spouse. In fact, your children are the most important people in the process. This is especially true when you consider how they experience the stress, sadness, and other emotions that are inevitable during this time.

As a child, no matter how young or old, it’s never easy to go through a divorce with your parents. As such, it’s important that you do everything you can as a parent to avoid putting additional pressure or stress on your child. Below, we discuss 3 factors you should consider to ensure you’re doing everything possible to make the transition as smooth as possible for your children.

  1. Don’t Beat Around the Bush.

It can be tempting as a parent to keep your children in the dark about what’s going on. And to be sure, it’s not beneficial to drag children into the heart of the divorce. However, they should know what is going on.

By sitting your children down and explaining in an age-appropriate way what is happening, they will be better equipped to handle the process. Moreover, you should explain that both you and your spouse will continue to be there for them while being realistic about the changes that are to take place.

  1. Don’t Put Too Much Pressure on Your Children.

While you shouldn’t keep your children in the dark about what’s going on, you don’t want to tell them too much either. This is harmful and, at its core, puts unnecessary pressure on your child to keep secrets from their other parent or may even make them feel as if they have to pick a side.

Know what information to keep to yourself and don’t overshare with your children. After all, they are just children.

  1. Never Make Out Your Spouse as an Enemy

If you begin talking badly about your spouse in front of your children, they’re going to feel confused. More importantly, it may make them feel as if they must choose one parent over another, which is an unfair burden to place on any child.

If you don’t have anything nice to say about your soon-to-be former spouse, don’t say anything in front of your children. If they ask questions, provide answers in as neutral a way as you can. Doing so will make your children feel as if you are there for them no matter what and that they still have both their parents even if you aren’t together.
